Default what's an Epley?

Hi all. I have a question strictly out of curiousity since I don't have BPPV. What is an Epley and how is it done?

HI,

An Epley is usually for people that have BPPV. I have heard that it normally does not work for other disorders.

Basically what it is, is a manuver they do with your head, usually while you are laying down that puts the crystals or rocks back into place. Crystals become loose in the ear canal and float around in the fluid which is what usually causes us to spin when we put our heads in a particular position. The epley will put those crystals back into place and hopefully stop or slow down the spinning feeling. Some have to have it done a few times and some have to only have it done once. I had it done 3 times and now I have an excerise that I do at home when I start to get the spins. My PT calls it "bed excerise".

I hope that helps, I am not sure how it works if you do not have BPPV though. Maybe someone else has some info on that.

Here's a link to a you tube video of the Epley .... if someone does have crystals that do need to be repositioned - they will likely feel really dizzy in some of the positions. As a BPPV sufferer, it's not really a pleasant experience, but I'm definitely glad Dr. Epley came up with it because it does make a difference.

Thanks for the replies. It won't help me, but I was curious since I've read about it on here from the bppv people. Before getting diagnosed I had several doctors do it on me and the most that happened to me was I got a head rush from all the blood. I am glad it can help some people though.

Almost fainted on 11/12/07 with a spun out sensation. Blood works normal. 14/12/07 almost fainted driving home from work, went to ER. ENT diagnosed possible ETD dysfunction & possible V.N. Symp. inc Lightheadedness, stiff neck, ear full/dullness, ear popping & ringing, blured vision, light sensitivity, anxiety, shortness breath, pulpitations, fatigue, brain fog, dizzy/falling out feeling. PT suspected it was 90% VN & 10% migrane assoc. Been given VRT to do at home. Clean MRI done on 04/07/08 on the head and iams area. ENG test performed showed normal behaviours. Often cough with some flem/blood at least once a day, (believe the blood/flem is coming from the nose). Since then I occasionally feel like fainting at random
